Volleyball court diagram for learning the basic volleyball rules

These are the basic volleyball rules every new player, parent and fan needs. The simple rules of volleyball come down to this: two teams of six are separated by a net, and each team tries to ground the ball on the other side while stopping the same thing happening on their own.

Volleyball scoring rules

Matches use rally scoring: every rally ends with a point, no matter who served. Sets are played to 25 points and must be won by two. Matches are usually best of five (or best of three), and a deciding final set is played to 15, again win by two. Keep score on any phone with our free volleyball scoreboard.

The three-touch rule

A team may touch the ball up to three times before it must go over the net, and the same player cannot touch it twice in a row (a block does not count as one of the three touches in indoor volleyball). The usual pattern is dig or pass, set, attack.

Serving and rotation rules

When a team wins the serve back, all six players rotate one position clockwise. This keeps everyone cycling through the front row and the serving spot. Players must stand in rotational order when the ball is served, then they can move. Try it with our volleyball rotation planner, or see where each spot is in volleyball positions explained.

Common faults

  • Touching the net during play
  • Carrying or lifting the ball (a visible catch or throw)
  • Double contact by one player on a non-block touch
  • Serving or rotating out of order
  • Stepping on or over the end line while serving
Local rulesRecreational leagues often vary: some allow a lenient carry call, shorter sets or coed rules. Check your league’s rules before the first game.
