Reading the court
The net is at the top. The top row is the front row (positions 4, 3, 2 from left to right) and the bottom row is the back row (5, 6, 1). The highlighted player in position 1 is serving. When your team wins the serve back, everyone moves one spot clockwise.
Roles are examples: S setter, OPP opposite, MB middle blocker, OH outside hitter. See volleyball positions explained for what each role does.
What is a volleyball rotation?
A volleyball rotation is the clockwise shift that happens each time a team wins the serve back from the other team. It makes sure every player takes a turn in the front row, the back row and the serving spot. The team that serves keeps its positions until it loses a rally.
Clockwise rotation order
The order is 2 to 1, 1 to 6, 6 to 5, 5 to 4, 4 to 3 and 3 to 2. The player who arrives in position 1 serves next. After six rotations, the lineup returns to where it began. At the moment of serve, players must be in rotational order, and then they can move to their usual spots.
5-1, 6-2 and 4-2 volleyball rotation systems
The rotation order never changes. What changes is how many setters you have and who does the setting.
| System | Setters | Front-row attackers | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-1 | One, plays all six rotations | 3 or 2 | 5-1 volleyball rotation |
| 6-2 | Two, back-row setter sets | 3 | 6-2 volleyball rotation |
| 4-2 | Two, front-row setter sets | 2 plus the setter | 4-2 volleyball rotation |

FAQ
How does a volleyball rotation work?
When a team wins the serve back, all six players move one position clockwise. The player who moves into position 1 serves. After six rotations every player is back where they started.
Which way do you rotate in volleyball?
Clockwise: 2 to 1, 1 to 6, 6 to 5, 5 to 4, 4 to 3 and 3 to 2.
What is the 5-1 volleyball rotation?
A system with one setter, one opposite, two outside hitters and two middle blockers. The setter plays all six rotations. See the 5-1 volleyball rotation guide.
What is the 6-2 volleyball rotation?
A system with two setters. The setter in the back row sets, so there are always three front-row attackers. See the 6-2 volleyball rotation guide.
Does the planner show a 6-2 or 4-2 lineup?
The planner uses a 5-1 style lineup. The clockwise movement is the same in every system, so it still shows how any team rotates. The guides explain who sets in the 6-2 and 4-2.
